Casual Summer Dresses and How to Style Them

A casual summer dress is the lowest-effort outfit in existence, which is exactly why it is worth thinking about for five minutes. The difference between looking thrown-together and looking effortless is almost always the shoes and one accessory — not the dress.

What makes a dress casual

Three things push a dress toward casual, and any one of them is enough:

1. Fabric — cotton, linen, chambray, jersey and seersucker all read casual regardless of the cut.
2. Construction — elastic waists, smocked bodices, drawstrings, patch pockets and visible topstitching.
3. Print and colour — small ditsy florals, gingham, stripes and tie-dye read relaxed.
